Research Discussion 5: Contemporary Issues
Topic:
Contemporary Issues
Description:
In essence, contemporary issues is used as a catch all term. So lets look at this simply, what does contemporary mean? In this context, it means current or at the very least, recent. In practice, this means that as long as the topic is being discussed in the scientific literature in the past 5 years, it meets the requirement for contemporary. To be clear, all of your sources should be from the most recent 5 years. Since this discussion is about contemporary issues currently under investigation, scientifically speaking, you should not need to use anything other than scholarly sources. With regards to the term "issue" we should try and limit ourselves to discussion on problems and potential solutions, not just interesting technologies, components, and systems. So the integration of RPAS into shared airspace is a clear example, while "infrared electro-optical sensors for UAV based fire detection" not so much.
The key feature of any potential topic is that it should not belong in any of the other discussion. So it cannot be about RPAS/UAS/UAV or propulsion, and by definition history cannot be contemporary. If you are concerned about your topic, especially if it belongs in the "Future" topic, please discuss this with me in class; it is very grey what belongs in contemporary and what belongs in future. We can discuss in class, and we can agree on more guidelines as need.
There are broad topic areas listed below. Be very, VERY specific in your topic, to enable other students to work in a related space. "Covid 19" for example would be too broad, there are many thing Aviation to discuss about that. If working in a related space, ensure you have UNIQUE references!
Guidelines:
Each student is required to post a unique topic. To prevent overlap and duplication, you must post your topic in Week 9. When you are ready to submit your original contribution, simply reply to your own topic. Please ensure you topic is detailed enough to avoid duplication.
In the case of similar topics, unique sources will be required. If a similar topic is posted (despite the mechanism to prevent it) and it contains similar sources, only the post submitted first will be marked.
NOTE: You must NOT reply to a topic title which has no content, you must wait until the student has posted their full original contribution. This is to prevent students from undercut before they have even posted. You can, however, prepare some material in anticipation of the contribution being posted.
Originals are due Friday, and replies are due Sunday of Week 10.
Remember to get full marks, two scholarly sources (and no non-scholarly sources) are required for your original, and at least one for your replies. Please see the course assessment guide for all the exact marking criteria.
Topics (Areas, not specific, DO NOT USE ONE OF THESE AS YOUR TOPIC):
- Safety
- Security
- Weather Issues
- Airports and Aerodromes
- Air Traffic Control
- Air Traffic Management
- Finance and Economics
- Human Factors
- Human Performance
- Automation
- Fuels
- Emissions
- Noise
- MEA
- AEA*
- PAV*
- UAM*
- Many, many, many things military aviation!
* Note, it needs to be "commercially" operational to be considered here as a contemporary issue. Most (if not all) UAM solutions are future, while there could be some PAV options that are currently available. Similarly, a specific all electric GA aircraft would be contemporary, while an all electric transport category aircraft is clearly the future. If in doubt, ASK!
