The main learning activity is the ‘charrette’ or ‘crash course’, which is an intensive and collaborative design workshop that applies the pre-learning materials. Students prepare for charrettes by watching curated videos beforehand. They write a 200-word reflection on how the videos impacted on their thinking and how the insights gained might help them in their future careers as practitioners; they also summarize with the three most significant or memorable take-home messages from the videos. The charrette day starts with a 10-minute automated quiz on Moodle; this also helps ensure that all students arrive in class on time. During the next 2½ hours students work in teams to respond to design challenges related to the topics covered in the videos, and present their collaborative results in the end.
